
RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- A 12-year-old girl has died after being pulled from the water near the Neuse River Greenway Trail, according to the Wake County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies responded around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday to a report of a possible drowning near the Neuse River Greenway Trail and Loch Raven Parkway.
According to witnesses, the child was swimming when she went underwater and did not resurface. When first responders arrived, the girl had already been pulled from the water and was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

On Wednesday, the Wake County Sheriff's Office confirmed the 12-year-old had died from her injuries.
"On behalf of the entire Wake County Sheriff's Office, we extend our deepest sympathies to the family. Please keep all who have been affected by this tragedy in your prayers," Sheriff Willie Rowe said.
The Raleigh Police Department, Knightdale Fire Department and Wake County EMS assisted at the scene.
The incident remains under investigation, and authorities have not released additional information.
